Accelerating the Implementation of Kigali through Lifecycle Refrigerant Management and Alternative Cooling Technologies: Side Event Report

December 16, 2024

The CC Lab's MOP36 Side Event Report

The Carbon Containment Lab hosted a side event at the Montreal Protocol's 36th Meeting of the Parties in October 2024 in Bangkok, with a focus on accelerating the phase down and phase out of dangerous refrigerant gases. By initiating the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) used primarily in air conditioning and refrigeration, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol represents a critical climate milestone. Fully implemented, the Kigali Amendment is projected to avoid up to 0.5°C of global warming by 2100. However, to speed up implementation and reach near-term climate goals, Lifecycle Refrigerant Management (LRM) and Alternative Cooling Technologies (ACTs) must be prioritized. The side-event brought together a panel of experts to discuss this and a lively conversation with participants ensued. Panelists were:

  • Scott Stone, Founder of Glencoe Strategies/Advisor to the CC Lab, moderator

  • Denise San Valentin, Programme Management Officer at the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC)

  • Richie Kaur, Senior Super Pollutant Reduction Advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)

  • Leslie Smith, Project Officer at National Ozone Unit, Government of Grenada

  • Maas Goote, Founder of Carraway Strategies

  • Anastasia O’Rourke, Senior Managing Director of the CC Lab
